However, the flaws don't affect the average user and probably won't delay production of 486-based machines, says Intel. The two flaws are in the 486 chip's floating point unit, which does specialized calculations. The flaws cause the chip to give incorrect answers for mathematical calculations, but only highly sophisticated calculations, such as those used in CAD and scientific applications. According to WSJ, "Intel said it had corrected the problems and would start producing bugless chips next week." The company also has reduced its workforce by about 35 percent, which brings worldwide employment to 380 people. During the past 5 months, extensive effort was expended in the attempt to secure funding to put into production one of the company's two new products and to continue funding the development of the second. The first of these, a 760-megabyte unit, demonstrated excellent performance, but was over 9 months late to the market place. Since a significant number of potential sources had already selected their suppliers, it did not appear that the company would be able to obtain the volume production required to justify the cost of tooling for full scale manufacturing. Therefore, it has been decided to discontinue further efforts on this product. The second product, code named SHRIKE, is a 3.5-inch, 400-megabyte unit which is in the final stages of development. Initial responses from customers on SHRIKE have been very promising. The company has determined that, in order to finance SHRIKE's continuing development, all resources should be devoted to this product. The Model 12 has an 80C286 CPU running at user-selectable 6 or 12 MHz. It comes with 1 Mb of RAM, expandable to 4 Mb (2 additional megabytes on the motherboard and 1 Mb using an memory expansion card); a 20 Mb hard disk; and an 84-key keyboard with 12 function keys. Options include a snap-on 3.5-inch, 1.44 Mb floppy drive; a Hayes-compatible internal 2400 bps modem, a 12 MHz 80C287 coprocessor, and a numeric keypad and carrying case. The Model 12 measures 8 x 12 x 3 inches and weighs 6.7 pounds with battery. It retails for $4,199. The models 25 and 45 have an 80L286 microprocessor running at user-selectable 6, 8, and 12 MHz. Both include a 3.5-inch, 1.44 Mb floppy drive; 640K of RAM, expandable to 3.64 Mb using an optional 1 Mb EMS RAM card and 2 Mb RAM modules. A 20 Mb hard drive comes on the Model 25, and a 40 Mb hard drive on the Model 45. Both have a 101-key keyboard connector for an external keyboard. Both models measure 12 x 14 x 3 inches and weigh 14 pounds with battery. The Model 25 retails for $4,999, and the Model 45 for $5,599. The new prices are effective immediately. The price reductions range from $100 for the Dell System 210, a 12.5 MHz, 80286-based PC with 512 kilobytes of RAM to $1,100 for the Dell System 325, a 25 MHz, 80386-based personal computer with 4 megabytes of RAM. All Drive-On-A-Card products are compatible with leading XT and AT systems, and can be inserted into any available 8-bit or 16-bit slot. The ST124CX and ST137X offer 21 and 32 megabytes. SECURE DATA NETWORK ONLINE PC DATA BACKUP AND RETRIEVAL SERVICE --------------------------------- (BPS) -- Secure Data Network Inc. (SDN) now operates what the company refers to as the first online data back-up and retrieval service for personal computers and PC-based local area networks (LANs). The new nationwide service, unveiled Oct. 31, brings to PCs and PC LANs a level of data security and integrity before only available for expensive mainframes and minicomputers. The basic service costs just $19 a month per PC and as low as 5 cents per minute transmission time. Modems and software can be leased through SDN at a very low cost. The SDN Subscriber System 1000 is available immediately and can cost as little as $19 per month. As an example, a subscriber can choose user-defined backup (in which the user determines what data is to be backed up and at what times), which costs just $59 a month. The monthly fee includes a 2400 baud modem (with up to 79 percent compression of data files, a 2400 baud modem effectively becomes a 9600 baud or higher modem), back-up software, and 60 minutes of back-up time. Additional back-up time is available for as low as 5 cents per minute.
